The association of an element or enumerated value in an information model with the concept it represents via the element or value name. Contrast with semantic binding. See also: semantic binding --Jay Lyle 15:12, 23 February 2012 (EST)

Original:

"The relationship between an element or attribute in the information model and its name. The name involved in the name binding may be either a simple string or a description from a terminology, such as SNOMED CT."

I have taken three types of binding (name, semantic, and value) and broken them into two axes: name vs. semantic and element vs. value, for 4 possible combinations. An element may be by name or by semantics, as can a value set.
