Previous definition adapted from IHTSDO:

"Design patterns are full logical models for which the meaning of data can be represented in a clinical information system (both in the user interface and in storage levels) with more than one split between the information model and the terminology model."

I don't think a pattern has to be a "full" model; the question of where representation can occur is orthogonal (and not limited to the two examples given), and the meaning of "split" is unclear.
