Reference Definition: A set of terms, concepts and codes in a specific subject field whose meanings have been defined or are generally understood. The purpose of a terminology is to provide a clear and unambiguous way to describe concepts so that two or more individuals can gain a shared meaning of those concepts. Terminology MUST be able to distinguish when two items are the same and terminology SHOULD be able to distinguish precisely how non-identical items are similar and different. A terminology is composed of concepts along with synonymous terms, properties and various relationships. (HL7 SAIF-IF)
