Definition: A concept that is represented by an expression coordinating two or more constituent concepts, e.g., "arm" plus "has laterality" plus "left." Post-coordinating concepts can avoid the need to create large numbers of predefined concepts within the terminology set; however, many systems cannot parse postcoordinated expressions.
Reference Definition: A concept which is defined using an expression or structure in terms of two-or-more other concepts from within a terminology set. A postcoordinated concept does not have a predefined unique identifier within the given terminology set. Post-coordinated concepts can avoid the need to create large numbers of predefined concepts within the terminology set. However, many systems can only accept precoordinated concept, or structural representations of postcoordinated concepts. (HL7 SAIF-IF)
Reference Definition: A representation of a complex concept that is created externally to the Code System (i.e., by an outside entity or user) is called a post-coordinated expression. (HL7 Core Principles)
